Poetry - Alliteration Essay Example for Free
Poetry Alliteration Essay The first poem ââ¬ËSonnet 130ââ¬â¢ by William Shakespeare has a humorous view on the traditional ideas of beauty. The poem is a five duplet metre with the stressed sounds starting on the second word of each line. Each line has the same amount of stressed and unstressed patterns which is very common for sonnets to make it quick and easy to read. The five duplet pattern never mimics human speech in the way a four duplet pattern does. The end of each alternating line has a distinct rhyming pattern which goes on throughout the poem. There is also an assonance pattern with each of these words. The first line ââ¬ËMy mistressââ¬â¢ eyes are nothing like the sunââ¬â¢ shows use of a simile the same as most of the last line ââ¬ËI think my love as rare asâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬â¢ More use of similes could have been made in the following lines. There is an example of weak alliteration in line eleven ââ¬ËI grant I never saw a goddess goââ¬â¢ There is a metaphor in line four when he talks about his mistressââ¬â¢ hair, saying they are ââ¬Ëblack wiresââ¬â¢, this view today would be a completely different view from when the poem was written. In our modern time we think of electrical wires coming out of her head. Most of the poem gives negative connotations, the words ââ¬Ësunââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ëred coralââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ëperfumeââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëmusicââ¬â¢ provides beautiful images. The denotations are her eyes do not shine like the bright sun, her breath ââ¬Ëreeksââ¬â¢ unlike the smell of perfume and her voice is not pleasant to hear unlike music. The second poem Philip Larkinââ¬â¢s ââ¬ËThe Treesââ¬â¢ is a twelve line poem that seems to compare the life of a tree to human life. In each stanza the first and fourth line, the end word rhymes with one another along with the second and third last word also rhyming. There is a four duplet pattern with the stressed pattern on the second syllable of each line. Each of these words show a clear assonance pattern with the words ââ¬Ëthreshââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëafreshââ¬â¢ repeated three times, when spoken aloud almost sound like the wind rustling through the leaves of the tree.

Digital Security And Privacy Information Technology Essay
Digital Security And Privacy Information Technology Essay In this essay i will look at the basic fundamentals of security and privacy for users and businesses in the 21st century and what i think the security risks are for them and what the impact the security problems have on our privacy laws, does this controversal access to everybit of information about people actually make system more secure e.g prevent system attacks. I will go indept into what i believe are the main security risks for users and businesses when browsing the internet or shopping and using online banking and also discuse briefly what it would be like to have no privacy. I will also discuses how when a user goes on a scoial networking site or search engine they might be at risk of sharing information unwillingly with the providers. And another topic i will be discussing in this is how humans fail in there bit for security and how to prevent this from happening. Digital security in the 21st century is now more important than ever before, there are many different types of security threats to the average person, business or even government. This is because everything we do on a daily basis can have a security risk, whether it be from online shopping or checking your email. If a users computer has been hacked or has some spyware or malware and they are using it for online shopping, then the attacker may be able to gain access to the users sensitive data which can then be used for fraud or theft or sold on to a third party for marketing data. Shopping in a store using your debit card can also be a risk as debit cards can be cloned by staff and pin numbers stolen using a device that looks the same as the card machine but has been designed or modified to remember pin codes and clone users debit cards/credit card details. Laptops and Mobile phones being stolen can have personal information on them, even losing your universal serial bus storage device or USB pen drive as they are know as for short which can contain all sorts of information because people, businesses and governments all use these devises to move or store data. And if the data is not encrypted then there is always the chance that someone can gain access to it. Security is the main issue when it comes to a persons personal information whether it be from browsing the Internet to online banking there will always be people who want to steal information for an entire range of reasons (eg: phishing and fraud) ! Another thing to be wary of is the topic of Liberty; are security laws infringing on our basic human rights to privacy and our security by allowing corporations and even governments to spy on our Internet communications for what they call à ¿Ã ½anti-piracyà ¿Ã ½ or National Security such as the PATRIOT Act in the United Sates of America, and this brings me to conclude, why should the rights of the many suffer because of the actions of a few. And this is being debated everyday of every week by civil rights activists to our own government deciding what they can do and cannot do. Too much information available about anyone to anyone can be dangerous and this topic should be taken extremely seriously. One major impact on privacy is the development of social networking sites and search engine providers that sell the users information to third parties. The quote Privacy is a fundamental human right. It underpins human dignity and other values such as freedom of association and freedom of speech. It has become one of the most important human rights of the modern age. by Marc Rotenberg, Protecting Human Dignity in the Digital Age (UNESCO 2000) 1. And i think that we are heading into a society that does not care about the fundamental human rights we have and how we attained them. For example anti-utopian, dystopian novels of the 20th century, depicted societies where privacy was non existant and an intrusive, oppressive regime denied this fundamental human right as a matter of course. In Yevgeny Zamyatins novel à ¿Ã ½Weà ¿Ã ½ 2the population lived in buildings constructed of glass, which allowed everyone and anyone to snoop on anyone whom they wished. Opposition is impossible in a society where privacy is non-existant. George Orwells 1984 à ¿Ã ½Big Brotherà ¿Ã ½ and tele-screen are frighteningly similar to todays move towards a 21stcentury society where the Government and corporations have full access to every bit of any citizens digital life. The 19thcentury black champion of civil rights, Frederick Douglass protested that any rights and liberties won by any people were awarded after contesting the power structures of society. He said in 1857 that à ¿Ã ½Power concedes nothing without a demand, it never did and it never will. Find out just what any people will quietly submit to, and you have found out the exact measure of injustice and wrong that will be imposed upon them.à ¿Ã ½ 3 Frederick Douglass, speaking on the emancipation of the West Indies, 1857 à ¿Ã ½Men may not get all they pay for in this world, but they must certainly pay for all they get.à ¿Ã ½ 3 also has meaning to that you can use a search engine for free and also a social networking site, but be careful of your information as they might sell it on to third parties. In the book; The Art of Deception: Controlling the Human Element of Security 4, the authors Kevin D. Mitnick William L. Simon naà ¿Ã ½blame the Human individual as the weakest link, the individual is relegated to a position below the security system in question. Page 3, titled in big black letters à ¿Ã ½Securitys Weakest Linkà ¿Ã ½ states à ¿Ã ½the humanfactor is truly securitys weakest link.à ¿Ã ½ In the Computer Security Handbook, John Wiley Sons (2002) 5which some of the top security specialists in the world have contributed to. Donn B. Parker, a retired (1997) senior management consultant at RedSiren Technologies in Menlo Park, Ca, who has specialised in information security for 35 of his 50 years in the computer field and who Information Security Magazinehas identified as one of the five top Infosecurity Pioneers (1998) writes in à ¿Ã ½5.1.3 Functions of Information Security Computer Security Handbookà ¿Ã ½ that the complete opposite to the previous paragraph is true, that the current three function security model, (prevention, detection, and recovery) are completely insufficient and that an 11 function model is needed to eliminate or mitigate the security risks in question, which include avoidance, deterrence, detection, prevention, mitigation, transference, investigation, sanctions rewards, recovery, correction, finally; education 5. It is easy to jump to conclusions and intuitively blame the people whom personify à ¿Ã ½hackersà ¿Ã ½ or adversaries to computer security professionals, but history shows us that nothing should be taken for granted concerning security. No system will be inherently perfect, and new technologies are continually being created and updated, and most will likely become more secure as time goes on. Human nature on the other hand is a constant and no man or woman should ever denigrate humanity to a role below that of a firewall, for any reason. If a computer security system is vulnerable, patch the system or come up with innovative methods to secure it from outside access, improve on the imperfect and take comfort knowing that you have executed your job successfully, thus without sacrificing your morality. Types of attack à ¿Ã ½ Once a malicious program has been installed on a person or business or governments bodys computer, it can cause harm in many different ways. And the most typical mechanisms for attacks by hackers is: à ¿Ã ½ taking control of a users access and pretending to be that legitimate user. This can be very bad if a hacker gains access to any information as the user might not realise in time for it to be stopped being used eg. bank account or credit card information being stolen. à ¿Ã ½ Stealing or copying secret or confidential data for corporate espionage or other purposes. à ¿Ã ½ Destroying corporate data to do financial damage to a business or government body à ¿Ã ½ à ¿Ã ½ Causing network and system shortages to paralyze a companyà ¿Ã ½s operations eg. Denial of service attack (D.O.S) or Distributed denial of service attack (D.D.O.S). Risks to an Organisation: Security vulnerabilites coming from within an organisation are on the increase in todays businesses and are increasingly the operational risks of any business in todays world, and in a time of recession this is not good because it brings the running costs of the business up and costs to the average person may go up also . so this can lead to a loss of reputation in the regard to customers or partnership in a company or even the share holders of the company. There may also be a risk to the business by interruption to the company and lead to the violation of legal and government reulation requirements to protect sensitive customer information E.G OFCOM if the attack works, some examples are: à ¿Ã ½ Unauthorized access to any information where the access includes disclosure, modification and destruction of any data. à ¿Ã ½ Unauthorized users or hackers, i.e. a person who have not been given the rights by the owner/user to access the system. How do people fail in the line of security? Social Engineering Manipulation: con-artists are being used to acquire confidential information by manipulating genuine users into telling them. It is a new type of insider attack that is on the up trend similar to an attack that is knowm as à ¿Ã ½phishingà ¿Ã ½ in which a malicious or hackeris able toget internal access with access to company sensitive information in turn which can lead to other users/customers into providing access to forbiddon information. These con-artists rely and work on the basis that people are kind hearted and not aware of the valuble information they know and are careless about protecting it because they think its irrelevant. These con-artists will search bins or skips or take advantage of peopleà ¿Ã ½s natural ability to choose passwords that are based on what is considered to bemeaningful to the user such as relativeà ¿Ã ½s, date of birth or pets name etc but can be easily guessed if the hacker learns persoanl information about them. the name they now give the method these con-artists employ is called à ¿Ã ½Social engineeringà ¿Ã ½ and will always a threat to any security system. More internal threats may be: if there is aloss of data or data is corrupted, and backups fail this will lead to business having a losses of revenu and this in turn may affect the clients and loss of money to a business. There may also be misuse and theft of Call Records and information and also tele-communication center in which, internal breaches my accure by users who sometimes bypass the usage record from billing someone or a subscribers and then bydeleting the call record information from a database or by manipulating a program to overlook simple things to user subscribers. Identity theft: Identity theft of a customerà ¿Ã ½s valuable information such as address, security passwords credit card information, and date of birth or in a businessà ¿Ã ½s sense, ID cards, Access codes . Identity fraud is a term that is used to refer to any type of crime in which any person or business wrongfully gets hold of and uses another personà ¿Ã ½s personal data in anyway way that may involves fraud or deception, typically for capital gains eg. giving the business an upper-hand from a competitor. Information used in scanning of biometrics for example of soem (face image scanner, palm print scanner, hand scanner ,handwriting of a person, fingerprints, voice recognition software, iris/retina scaners ) are each unique to every person and cannot be given to another human for their use, but can be faked, well some of them. However, personal data, especially a credit card account or debit card number, and other valuable personal information can be taken advantage of and maybe used by the wrong person for fraudulent purposes and sold to third parties at the cost to the average users. The not so innocent: Browsing the Web and using e-mails can seem a normal exercise in layman terms but may seem naà ¿Ã ½ve to the advanced users whom understand the security risks. For the average user however, all their activities can upset business. Some viruses that can do this are ( Worms/trojons/malware/spyware or Choke viruses) that are design and aimed at Instant Messaging systems that people use such as a social networking site and windows live messenger (MSN), the users may use these softwares or websites to talk to their friends online or send information from and each pose their own unique security threats. Anti-virus softwares and other tools may not detect malicious code opening through the font-system 6 or Instant Messaging system, so infected files can infect the desktop and then into the network or a business. If a companyà ¿Ã ½s usb stick or security cards or notebooks are lost or stolen, important information may be at risk such as id names and Unique Identifier numbers. Outside threats to an organisation: External threats are mixed threats that combine many different ways such as worms, viruss, spam and distributed denial of service (DDOS). Every day, hundreds of new ways are discovered to attack software and security breaches by intruders, hackers and security professionals. There are more than 30k hacking-based Web sites on the internet now so it no longer needs a computer savy person to hack a site, just someone with time and patience. How to keep your computer safe with Virus Counter Measures. Regular Updating of a users Anti-Virus and Anti Spyware Software: This is to protect the user against viruses and malware/spyware and this is why antivirus software should be installed. All user email attachment files should be scanned: This is because computer viruses are most likely to be in an email attachment. just because emails come from your best friends does not mean it is still not important to scan there emails which may contain attachments before opening them as they may contain anything. Key points for handling email attachments: à ¿Ã ½ Be careful when opening email attachments from unknown recipients. à ¿Ã ½ à ¿Ã ½ Do not be fooled by the appearance of attachment files always check the extension to make sure its not a .exe, .com or any other à ¿Ã ½executableà ¿Ã ½ extension for a word document or image file. à ¿Ã ½ à ¿Ã ½ Do not send a plain text that can be included in the body of an email message as an attachment file eg. Encrypt your messages. à ¿Ã ½ à ¿Ã ½ Learn about how email attachments are handled by different email programs. à ¿Ã ½ à ¿Ã ½ Every file that is should be scanned with a users anti-virus and anti-spyware scanner before opening, because the user will never fully know whats inside. à ¿Ã ½ à ¿Ã ½ A lot of files such as image files, .MP3,.MP4 and .avi videos are downloaded from the Internet, but some are notwhat we expect and contain malicious programs embedded in them or in the code of these files to hurt or dammage our computers, and a way to avoid this is to be sure to scan downloaded files before using them or opening them. An example is the font system vulnerability of Windows XP. 6 à ¿Ã ½ à ¿Ã ½ Take full advantage of the security functions/ settings supplied with any application software à ¿Ã ½ à ¿Ã ½ Regulary updates of Security Patches Should be installed: All recent viruses attempt to exploit bug in a software or security holes that a programmer mite not have known about when creating the software to gain access to the operating systems and application software that a current user might be using. à ¿Ã ½ à ¿Ã ½ If there is any weakness in your computer it can be and most likely will be infected with viruses or have corporate malware on them and the only way to combat this is by previewing emails or accessing the Internet when all security updates have been applied and clearing your Internet cookies after every session. causes of Virus Infection must not be overlooked. If you have encountered symptoms that you think are a virus you should do a scan, a users computer may have been infected with any sort of virus . so it is very important to watch out for this as it can be a major security flaw and scan your computer for viruses regularly to avoid disapointment. If a users computer system or an application freezes, or the system does not start. Files may be deltes or just become hidden. Unknown icons apear. some programs may make attempts to access the Internet without any notification to the user, this is why a firewall is needed. Emails are sent without the userà ¿Ã ½s consent. Scan intuitively to make sure there is no virus or spyware on a users PC. All a users data should backup data regulary in case of of system failure: Data corrupted by a system or hardware failure cannot always be restored by using software. Make the habit of getting use to backing up. Conclusion

Presentation on the Expansion of the Universe
Presentation on the Expansion of the Universe Good morning/afternoon, today I will be talking to you about the expanding universe. The topics that I will be covering today would be: thesis statement, Background to the Universe Expansion, what causes it to expand? what evidence are there to support it, did it start from the Big Bang? And what happens to the galaxies as it expands? These topics will be supported through the key idea; how gravity is related to the expansion of the universe? I would like to begin with my thesis statement, the universe is expanding and as the universe expands the galaxies are all moving away from each other in all directions and the once that are the farthest are moving the fastest. Does this mean that no matter what galaxy we are in, everything is expanding?, is our galaxy the milky way also expanding? Does this mean that the entire solar system is expanding? What about the things on earth? And also does the amount of matter present also increase through the expansion? The answer to all these questi on relates back to the year of 1929 when an astronomer at named Edwin Hubble discovered that the universe is expanding through the biggest telescope that was available in his time. He pointed the telescope at distant galaxies and for the first time we could see those distant galaxies and he noticed something very funny about the light from them. The light from those galaxies were red shifted which means those galaxies were moving away from us. Redshift ââ¬â Hubble constant Now like sound, light travel out from its source as a wave, different colours have different wavelengths, blue light have a relatively short wavelength whereas red light have a relatively longer wavelength. Consider an object that moves away from you, as it continues to move then the wavelength of its light get stretched and moves towards the red end of the spectrum and so we call this a red shift. Every galaxy that Hubble looked at was rushing away from our galaxy Milky Way. He realised that the further away the galaxy was, the bigger the redshift of the light and that meant those galaxies were moving away from us at faster and faster speeds. Itââ¬â¢s not that the galaxies are moving apart but itââ¬â¢s the fact that the entire universe is expanding, the whole of space is getting bigger. This discovery led us to an astonishing conclusion that all the matter that we see today must at one time have been in a very dense and hot region of space and that is the phase we call the Big Bang. The fate of the universe It is taken around 13 billion years for our visible universe to get to where it is today, but what does the future hold and tell us about ten years ago, cosmologist have three theories for what would happen to our universe: one the open universe ââ¬â if there wasnââ¬â¢t enough gravity, then the universe would keep slowly expanding for ever and become infinite. Two the closed universe ââ¬â that the amount of gravity in the universe would slow its expansion down until it collapses back in on itself, And three the flat universe ââ¬â that there would be just a perfect amount of gravity so that the universe grows to a particular size and then stops. But then astronomers discovered something completely unexpected. The expansion of the universe is accelerating and they realised that there must be something pushing on it and we donââ¬â¢t know what it is, but we know it is there. In early times of 1900s, astronomers presumed that the universe was slowing down and that the gravity would hold everything down and maybe will come back and explode again and people expressed this idea with a mathematical expression that the universe is flat meaning that the universe will continue to expand slowly without ever stopping. But relatively now in this 21st century, astronomers were trying to find out that at which rate is the universe slowing down using extraordinary technologies like telescopes all around the world and observing the dark night sky and the supernovas referring to the standard brightness that relates to the distances. But what they actually discovered was that the universe is not slowing down. But it is accelerating; the universe is accelerating at its expansion and do you know why? No one knows why, no one knows why but what you hear these days is the expression dark matter or dark energy and these are mathematical concepts which explain the gravitationa l attractions of galaxies, clusters of stars and their expansion. Doesnââ¬â¢t it seem logical that something is out there that is causing the universe to expand, it can be considered here also on Earth but itââ¬â¢s the fact the we donââ¬â¢t know how to detect it. The Hubble diagram Now days we have the distance that Hubble measured using the sapphires and the velocity he measured using the red shift and the blue shift of the spectra. So we are scientists we like to make charts and graphs so letââ¬â¢s graph these two things, the galaxy velocity versus the galaxy distance and this is the chart that Hubble made. Each of the point on this graph is a unique galaxy and what you can see here is that many, in fact most of the galaxies are redshifted. Moreover, galaxies that are further away are higher redshifted than galaxies that are close. Now yes there are couple blueshifted galaxies on this plot if you look closely, and thatââ¬â¢s alright because these are galaxies that are actually very close to us such as the Andromeda galaxy and it turns out that we are gravitationally attracted to one another, we are pulling each other in and we will in couple billion years slam into the Andromeda galaxy and will make one big new galaxy. Now we can ignore those local effe cts but the general overwhelming effect is that galaxies that recede faster from us, the more distant they are and this is the Hubble law. And this of course, is another c change in our understanding of the universe because what it suggests or supports is that instead of living in just a universe with the galaxies that are sort of hanging out and not doing much, we are actually living inside an expanding universe. The grid expanding universe representation This grid represents space and each little square is a bit of space and these little dots are the galaxies that recede in space and now galaxies are free to move through space, they do that too like I said that we are going to hit Andromeda and thatââ¬â¢s because both galaxies are moving through space at one another. But the other thing that happens is that the galaxies move away from one another because space itself is expanding between them.so here is space at some beginning time and here is space at a later time when the space itself has expanded. You can see that the galaxies havenââ¬â¢t moved relative to the grid of space but theyââ¬â¢ve moved from one another because the space itself has gotten much larger and no matter where you are, no matter which galaxy that you are in, if you look at all the other galaxies they all appear to be moving away from you with a velocity that is proportional to their distance, so things that are moving away faster are more distant from u s. The balloon example You can also think of the example of a balloon being blown up, just imagine the surface of the balloon and there are little dots that are little galaxies all over the surface of the balloon and as you blow it up the surface itself increases and so all the little dots representing galaxies move away from all the other little dots on the surface and are accelerating in their expansion and this is the universe that we live in now. This agency that is causing this accelerating expansion is called the dark energy, so it appears that although we answered all of the big questions, we are still left with many more. We donââ¬â¢t know what the dark matter is but we know that it is there. What happened in the early stages of our universe? We donââ¬â¢t know the answer to that either. We havenââ¬â¢t got any clue to as what our universe is going to be doing billions of years of now, we just donââ¬â¢t know because we donââ¬â¢t understand it but with the astonishing technologies that are available to us today and through the discovery of Edwin Hubble, we know one thing for sure, the universe is expanding.
Joseph Bediers The Romance of Tristan and Iseult and Jean Cocteauââ¬â¢s Et
The Romance of Tristan and Iseult, by Joseph Bà ©dier, and Jean Cocteauââ¬â¢s 1943 cinematic adaptation of the epic love story Eternal Return, both portray the love between Tristan and Iseult, and Patrice and Natalie as an agonizing cancer that overpowers the lovers after they consume the love potion. But the differences of how and when the love potion is administered, and the loversââ¬â¢ feelings for each other before the potion is drunk, reveal different depictions of the love potion between the novel and the film. The first difference between the film and the novel is when the two lovers drink the love potion. In the book, they drink the love potion when they are still on the boat and have ââ¬Å"dropped anchor by an islandâ⬠(Bà ©dier, 42). Here Iseult has not met King Mark. But in the film, Natalie and Patrice drink the love potion after Natalie has been introduced to Uncle Mark. In the first instance, they both have a chance to elope, and no one would be the wiser. They can easily live a life of comfort and full of love with each other, but Tristan chooses to hand over the woman he loves to his Uncle, and suffer for his love. In the film, Natalie and Patrice are not given this option, and therefore do not have a chance to escape their faith. Also in the book, an unknowing maid gives the love potion to the lovers. She believes that she is just giving them wine. This signifies the fact that no one intentionally wished for them to suffer, but faith led them to it. But i n the film, Achille puts the love potion in their drinks on the pretext of murdering them with poison. In the film the fact that the love potion is labeled poison, foreshadows the pain and sorrow the two lovers will face, because poison leads to a slo... ...g this news for the first time and is astounded and angry. Aunt Gertrude, though shrewd and unlikable, also realizes the attraction between Patrice and Natalie, and tells Patrice that he is marrying the girl he loves to his Uncle. Her awareness on this subject may be rooted in her hate for Patrice and her desire to destroy him because her son can never be as loved as Patrice, but that does not alter the fact that she feels and notices the love between Patrice and Natalie. The difference in the film and the novel alter the depiction of the love affair between Tristan and Iseult and Patrice and Natalie. While the novel portrays Tristan and Iseult as causing the suffering they endure because of their love, the film makes Patrice and Natalie the victims of faith and love. Works Cited Bedier, Joseph. Life in The Death of Ivan Ilyich Essay -- Tolstoy Death Ivan Ilych Ess
Life in The Death of Ivan Ilyich à à à à In Leo Tolstoy's The Death of Ivan Ilyich, the story begins with the death of the title character, Ivan Ilyich Golovin.à Ivan's closest friends discover his death in the obituary column in chapter one, but it is not until chapter two that we encounter our hero.à Despite this opening, while Ilyich is physically alive during most of the story's action he only becomes spiritually alive a few moments before his death. à The life of Ivan Ilyich, we are told, "had been most simple and most ordinary and therefore most terrible" (Tolstoy, Ch. 2).à In analyzing this description of Ivan's life, we see that Ivan has always done what is expected of him in the eyes of others (wife, co-workers, employers, etc.).à While Ivan believes his life has run easily, pleasantly, and decorously like it should, we see that in reality it is an unfulfilled life.à Ivan's closest associates are more worried about who will be next in line for promotion now that he is gone, and at his funeral they are more concerned over a bridge game than grieving for the loss of a friend, "The more intimate of Ivan Ilyich's acquaintances, his so-called friends, could not help thinking also that they would now have to fulfill the very tiresome demands of propriety by attending the funeral service and paying a visit of condolence to the widow" (Tolstoy Ch. 1). à Ivan's wife is also self-centered and exhibits great disdain for her husband, who she considers more of a nuisance and hassle than anything else.à Ivan's last days are spent in terrible physical agony, as he uncontrollably screams and moans in pain.à When Ivan's friends come to pay their respects to his widow, we see in her comments to them that she never reall... ...y view this as a Christian worldview, one that embraces the afterlife, I see it as a man looking forward to inevitable death because even if it came late he figured out a meaning to life.à In so doing he may not have had the opportunity to relive his life as no man does, but he found peace and fulfillment in his acceptance of his end.à Existentialism argues in the concept of the "eternal return" that an individual to be most fulfilled should live a life that, having to repeat it over identically for all eternity, would be a concept that would be embraced.à If Ivan had the chance to come back he would not enjoy living the same life over, but given another chance to build a new one he would surely construct one that is different. à WORKSà CITED à Tolstoy, L.à The Death of Ivan Ilyich.à Available: http://faculty.stcc.cc.tn.us/bmcclure/links2/ilyich.htm, 1886.

Belonging Band of Brothers
Admat-2 by Matthew Humphreys, Band of Brothers Band of Brothers is a television series based on easy company from the 101st Airborne division, during their training and deployment to Europe throughout WW2. It follows the story of the soldiers and officers throughout the war. It is narrated throughout by Major Richard Winters from his time as a second lieutenant all the way through until he is battalion commander. It is based on a true story and shows a sense of belonging that the solders feel throughout their time together along with a sense of not belonging felt by ââ¬Å"replacementsâ⬠and also by the soldiers themselves as they think of home. It has many links with Romulus in this sense because of the challenge that migrants face to belong and also through the hardships that Romulus and Raymond face with Christina`s illness. Belonging will be shaped by the challenges faced. This can be linked to band of brothers through the greater sense of belonging felt as an individual becau se of the struggle and challenges that the group faces. Throughout the war individuals become closer because of the battles won as a group it gives them commonality to build on. For example after easy company parachute into Normandy they are ordered to go and take out artillery positions that are defended by several machine guns. These positions are targeting Utah beach and their elimination is key to success of the landings on that beach. The German strength is estimated at 50 men; however the strength of Winters Company is 13 men, none the less they are successful in the attack. This attack is still repeated at West point as an example of how to assault a fixed position, the success of this attack gained much respect from both his superior and the men that he commanded. This respect allows them to work effectively together and gain a sense of belonging through this mutual respect for each other. This allows them to continue to build on this throughout the numerous other challenges t hat they face as a battalion including the charge during operation market garden in which he led a platoon of men against two battalions of German SS and drove them back over a river inflicting heavy losses. This accumulates throughout until the men see each other as family towards the end of the war. This is also evident in Romulus my father when they first come to Australia through Romulus seeking out other Romanians, this is because they face the same challenges to belong and adapt to Australian society. They gain each otherââ¬â¢s respect through their actions for example Romulus allows them to stay with him and they return this favour by looking after Raymond when Romulus is unable to do so. Commonality is essential to belonging; this is evident in Romulus My Father as many of the characters are faced with common experiences throughout the book from living in a rural area, to being discriminated against for being a migrant and also in dealing with a family member who has a men tal illness. This allows those who have experienced this commonality to feel a greater sense of belonging. In Romulus My Father Raymond and Romulus are brought closer together through Christina`s illness and mental instability. This is also evident in Band of Brothers as replacements are brought into Easy Company to replace wounded and killed solider they are not accepted into the company as they don`t have the commonality with the soldiers. They havenââ¬â¢t been in battle before and therefore are not trusted like those before them however once trust is gained through new common experiences allows them to understand and fell the same sense belonging. This is also evident as the original solider returns to the company after the Battle of Bastogne, it was the worst battle the company faced and because of this it was felt throughout the company that no else could understand what they had been through. It is also evident towards the end as a replacement is on patrol with a Normandy vete ran, the veteran deliberately forgets and calls him by the wrong name. When the replacement asks ââ¬Å"when are we going to jump into berlinâ⬠he is meet with a replies that this is the best of the war, boots that are enclosed, a hot shower every night and a warm bed to sleep in at night and no trees exploding in your face. This shows the lack of understanding from the new solider and therefore doesnââ¬â¢t allow him to belong.Techniques used in Band of Brothers include recount by winters throughout the series, another technique used is emotive music and enhanced sound effects. It also uses cut away shots during the siege of Bastogne, the camera cuts from Lt. Dyke back to winters during the attack giving the impression that it is happening real time and that decisions must be made that will cost lives. Sarcasm is also used towards replacements and all of the other soldiers realise what is happening except for the replacement adding to the sense of belonging felt by the other soldiers.

The Test Who has a stronger personality? Marian or Mrs Ericson? Give evidence from the text to support your answer. Marian has a stronger personality in this story. From the very beginning we can see that within Marian is persistence and perseverance ââ¬â despite failing once, she still goes ahead and tries for the test again, and despite knowing that she failed the previous time because of the examinerââ¬â¢s prejudice against her, she still tries again. In addition, when Mrs Ericson suggests that she ââ¬Å"slips them a little somethingâ⬠, she refuses, showing that sheââ¬â¢d rather fail with integrity than attempt to bribe the examiners ââ¬â which may or may not work against her. We see that Mrs Ericson constantly attempts to look at the brighter side of things ââ¬â constantly telling Marian that she will do fine, not seeming to look at possible other reasons why Marian failed the first time ââ¬â even when Marian pointed out to her about the ââ¬Ëmistakesââ¬â¢. During the test, Marianââ¬â¢s tolerance is tested ââ¬â the inspector constantly jibes at her, stereotyping her by her ethnicity. When he asks for her age, he mentions that she was ââ¬Ëold enough to have a flock of pickaninniesââ¬â¢. ââ¬ËPickaninniesââ¬â¢ referred to children of black descent, and the usage of ââ¬Ëflockââ¬â¢ shows that he was trying to prove black people as an inferior race, as he uses ââ¬Ëflockââ¬â¢, which is usually used with cattle. Despite knowing that she was getting insulted as an inferior race, she kept quiet, and this can be seen as an attempt to keep oneââ¬â¢s cool, to stay in control so that no further trouble would be caused. He also jibes at the fact that she ââ¬Ëainââ¬â¢t Southernââ¬â¢, and even the fact that sheââ¬â¢s supposed to be unable to read ââ¬â all because of her race, and Marian puts up with it well, only showing a small sign of anger, as seen at ââ¬Å"Her voice was not quite steady. â⬠To be able to put up with all the racial insults as much as possible shows her strong personality, to be able to accept reality also shows a strength of her personality, as accepting reality makes her attempt the driving test again. | A Sense of Belonging Write a response to the following statements. The story follows a straightforward chronological order, has simple plot, style, characterisation and setting, uses no flashbacks or twists, and is making a very obvious point. A simple incident, simply told, can be very effective. Despite its faults, this story is successful. The story follows a chronological order, however, it starts off with a few flashbacks to introduce characters and personalities. For example, the introduction of Sharon and Pariââ¬â¢s friendship was introduced through a flashback, and the introduction of how Mr Morley made Pari ââ¬Ëfeel differentââ¬â¢ was also made through a flashback. The story is told simply, about Pariââ¬â¢s struggle as a Maori to feel the sense of belonging that she needed, and instead of going through a hysterical amount of events to feel at home, it was only a simple incident ââ¬â A customer refused her service because she was Maori, and everyone stands up for her, and thus she feels as part of the team. Despite its fault, the story is definitely successful as the effect is achieved. | A Sound of Thunder Read the story again, looking specifically for ââ¬Ëseedsââ¬â¢ or clues to later events and list them down in note form with brief comments. The first ââ¬Ëseedââ¬â¢ is planted when the author brings in the sign outside of Time Safari. This sign would later be revisited at the end of the story, with many spelling mistakes, showing the changes that had occurred. Another seed was planted when the current president was mentioned, as at the end, the ââ¬Ëcurrentââ¬â¢ president had changed as well. However, the main ââ¬Ëseedââ¬â¢ that was planted was the idea that there would be a chain reaction ââ¬â kill one being of the past and many changes would occur. It was explained that killing one mouse could possibly kill an entire nation or an entire race, due to the chain reaction. Later on, Eckels steps off the pathway and kills a butterfly ââ¬â inadvertently causing the future to change, and causing a different president to be elected with the chain reaction. | ââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬â- Comment on the relative importance of each of the basic five elements (theme, plot, character, setting and style) in the story. The theme of the story is the importance of all actions made by people ââ¬â direct interventions that could cause major impacts in the future. In the story, we see a direct intervention made to the past ââ¬â Eckels killed a butterfly by accident, which triggered a chain effect and caused a different president to be elected. This is an important aspect as the story follows on this theme closely. The plot was simple, yet revolved around a complex concept of changing time and history. This is also rather important as it aided in the understanding of the paradox involved if time and history was altered by a personââ¬â¢s direct intervention. It allows an easier understanding of the butterfly effect and the domino effect. The characters in the story were each essential. Firstly, the bumbling Eckels served as a crucial aspect of the story, as the main character of the story. He is somewhat of a daredevil, yet he is afraid of challenges. His reckless attitude with his fear caused the entire trip back in time to go haywire as he steps off the pathway in panic and triggers the chain reaction. He is also somewhat childish, naive even, when he asks if it was possible to bring the butterfly back and bring it back to life. Travis serves as a more level headed character, much knowledgeable and wise, yet cruelly rash, contrasting to Eckelsââ¬â¢ childish behaviour. Lesperance often tells Travis to calm down, which is rather essential as without Lesperance, Travis probably could have left Eckels back in time and changed a lot more than needed. The story was set in 2055, when time travel was apparently possible. This would open the readers to assume a lot more possibilities, as to why Eckels behaved in such a reckless and childish manner, and to the possibilities of overriding a paradox as explained by Lesperance. The story was written with many descriptions, and ideas were embedded in the readerââ¬â¢s minds near the beginning. We are introduced to the concept of the domino effect early in the story, and the concept of a paradox, alongside the concept of the impossibility of it. Later this idea grows when ââ¬â firstly, Eckels steps off the path and kills a butterfly, resulting in a dramatic change in the future, secondly, the inability to change things back to normal, as explained earlier in the story ââ¬â Time does not allow one man to meet himself, and thus, even if the team travels back, they are unable to meet themselves, or stop the damage. This leads to the end, where Travis shoots Eckels rashly to pay for his ââ¬Ëminorââ¬â¢ mistake. | Unforgettable Experience Instructions: Read the following stories in ââ¬ËA Sense of Belongingââ¬â¢ and write a response to the question(s) related to each story.
